We got up early and hiked to Mash Fork Falls. It was a nice hike, but we liked our hike to Campbell Falls yesterday better. We ate instant oatmeal and drank our coffee (Thanks, Kari, for the camper's French press) and packed up. We stopped at the camp office to let the staff know how much we appreciated our stay at the West Virginia state park. We were actually sad to leave the state.
We took a short drive to hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Our picnic lunch plans were foiled by the gnats. We could not find our net hoods, so we ate lunch in the car and then walked over 2 miles of the beautiful Appalachian Trail. We were definitely hot and sweaty!
We drove on to Pounding Mill, Virginia, to Camp Evangel. It took significant effort to track down this Bible camp where my grandfather preached various summers. The recreation building was built with funds from his memorial money and was named in his honor. The current directors had graciously invited us to stay overnight in their staff housing.
We were thrilled to have a much needed shower there. Brian and Tabitha Tegler and their kids arrived from their vacation after we had already made ourselves at home. Brian was very proud to show us the snack shack and trading post in the Paul Sawtell Memorial Building. (The signage with his name is no longer there)
It was fascinating to hear about some of the first missionaries that came to this area in the 1920's. They suffered a great deal, but "kept on keeping on" for years.
We fixed a microwave dinner and slept better than expected.
