We got up at 5 AM to get through Pittsburgh before traffic got heavy. Sue loaded us up with cherries, yogurt, boiled eggs, homegrown peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers for the road.
We went to the Methodist cemetery in Short Creek, West Virginia, to see the gravesite of Su's great-great-great-great-great grandparents. The cemetery was very old and steep with many fallen stones. The Sawtell marker was large and obviously costly. It makes me wish I knew more about their story.
Then we drove along the Ohio River and back into Pennsylvania to head into the southern portion of West Virginia. Driving was crazy and fast in West Virginia! There were rolling, winding, steep, low mountains. It was heavily wooded with beautiful shades of green. It was 81° at noon. We were impressed by the number of universities there.
We arrived at Camp Creek State Park in southern West Virginia and checked in. We were skeptical at first about the campsite, but it worked out well, and we enjoyed our primitive site right beside the creek. After setting up, we hiked to Campbell Falls. There were huge flat rocks lining the entire creek bed. Lovely!
We cooked supper and went to bed and rested well. We really liked the campsite.
